TRES B PERFORMING SUNDAY 18 SEPT MARKET CLUB

Congolese born, Tres B, will be bringing his unique blend of central African folk, hip-hop and soul to the Market Club this Sunday with an exciting live set that’s sure to get people up on their feet.

Tres has an incredible story - after fleeing political violence in Congo, he came to UK and after a difficult time, he struck it lucky after performing a half-finished song to the Prince during a royal visit to Soho Centrepoint hostel.

After participating in a range of the Roundhouse’s music programmes for 11-25s, he was signed to Roundhouse Records in June last year and has since supported The Black Keys and been nominated for Best Male UK based Afro/Caribbean Act of 2010 at the BEFFTA Awards. His debut EP Best Friend launched as part of the Roundhouse Rising Festival in February.

Ping Pong resurgence in the East End!

We knew were on to something when we got together with Ping Pong lovers and all round nice fellas The Young Offenders Institute for the Market Club.

They know that Ping Pong is not just for serious athletes or Girl Guides, it’s for everyone. It’s dead social and you have a laugh with your mates (whilst kicking their ass!)

And we truly were trendsetters! Check out this BBC coverage showing a resurgence of Ping Pong, featuring our Shoreditch neighbours, The Book Club.

Matthew Syed (three-time Commonwealth table tennis champion & two-time Olympian) says in the BBc feature that the sport has undergone a huge transformation from being a “bit kinky” to now being the “epicentre of the fashionable, hip and trendy” - sounds like it belongs in East London for sure!

We had the guys and girls from Fitness First come down giving away a free day at their gym, plus they brought down two Treadmills to help us with our London Marathon challenge. 26 people ran a mile each on the treadmill in attempt to see if the can beat the marathon’s quickest time which was set that day by Kenyan Emmanuel Mutai at 2 hours 4 mins.

Results were announced later in the day, it was confimed that Market Club did not beat the time, erm we managed 4 hours 33 mins but it was all in good fun anyway. Two of the fastest runners came from the Rich Mix bar staff with one them getting a time of 5 mins 55 secs.

We had great DJ sets this month from the likes of The Young Offenders Insitute DJS, Goldierocks (who also ran a mile mid-set), plus our very special guest Joe Goddard from Hot Chip.

Later in the day our live band of the night, Embers took to the stage. Their laid back Prog-Soul sound went down a treat, and it showed via the audiences response.

Our Market Stall instalment was from our good friend Paperclip man selling his unique paperclip bowls. Also this month we introduced a Foosball table, courtesy of Red Bull, which went down well, plus we had the good old table tennis tables set upstairs and downstairs, with a brilliant ‘round the table’ session run by the Young Offenders.

We want to thank all the runners, Fitness First, Embers, Goldierocks, Joe Goddard, The Young Offenders Institute and last but not least everyone that came down!

Alternative Hip Hop from one of London’s finest record stores.

Eastside Books

Right in the hub of London’s East End, this bookshop is a popular venue for author/book events. The store specialises in literature on London, particularly East London and they’ll be bringing these books to our next Market Club event.

Check out some London talent at the the Designers/ Makers stall. They will be bringing by their 100% homemade illustrations & prints, jewllery, fashion/textiles, ceramics for you to puruse.

Lake of Stars are pleased to announce that our first Market Club event was a huge success.

Many market stalls turned up to sell everything from clothing to CD’s to custom-made bowls. Fenchurch, Fabric and Frockney Rebel all set up stalls, and those were only the ones that begin with ‘F’.

The event officially got underway as our compere Ray took to the stage to introduce Mikel and George. At only 15 and 14 respectively, they were recommended by the English Table Tennis Association to give a table tennis demo and show the attendees how it’s done.

We managed to speak to the boys after their losing to their opponents, albeit with mini-bats, to get the lowdown on how they got involved with table tennis. They’ve only been playing for a couple of years and were pretty inexperienced in playing with tiny bats.

Our first live act of the day was Sam Sallon who gave the audience a helping of his plaintive acoustic sound and in the end was encouraged to play an encore by the enthusiastic crowd. We spoke to Sam afterwards and he even performed a song for us, making it the very first Market Club Session track:

After some further table tennis action, Scubaroots stepped up to play their laid back reggae on a Sunday afternoon.

Their music perfectly suited the atmosphere but we were lucky enough to get an interview with them later and they told us that they have been known to play a lot heavier material and their album Babylon Pharmacy even contains some Drum ‘n’ Bass. Check out our interview with them below:

The final stage of the day was to play the ‘Round-the-Table’ game umpired by the Young Offender’s Institute clubnight. The rules are simple. Each participant gets a bat and two wristbands. When running around the table every time they lose a point, they lose a wristband until only one player remains. The game continued this way for the rest of the night whilst the DJ’s played on.

By the end of the day, many of the stalls had made a great profit from Market Club and we spoke to some of them to see how their day had gone:

Angaza Afrika brings together major works by 12 artists who best represent the innovative and dynamic artistic practices across the African continent and the African diasporas. It is a highly visual survey of contemporary African art compiled by Christopher Spring, curator of the African Galleries at The British Museum, and published by Laurence King.

Angaza Afrika, translated from the Swahili to mean ‘Shed light on Africa’ or ‘Look around Africa’, is comprehensive in its range. Each work is a stunning visual and physical manifestation of the artists’ energy and spirit, such as Rachid Koraïchi’s Sufi- inspired black and white appliqué work and the beautiful work of South African artist Karel Nel, who sets vast leaves from the Coco de Mer palms in atmospheric, elemental architectural spaces.
